The City of Minneapolis opened their new Safety Center at Lake Street Station on Monday, November 4, 2024. Among those in attendance at the grand opening were Mayor Jacob Frey, 9th Ward Councilmember Jason Chavez, Commissioner Todd Barnett, and Director Amanda Harrington.
Mayor Frey discussed that the safety center is a great example of working collectively on a coordinated vision for Minneapolis. Part of that vision is this truly comprehensive approach to mental safety, housing, and crisis support. Director Harrington emphasized that this is a space where everyone should feel welcome regardless of one’s language, residency, or citizenship.
The City signed a lease for two years; in that time, they will be performing data tracking to determine what’s working and what they need to adjust moving forward. The Center was designed based on feedback from the community and is intended to serve as a collaborative space with both government and community-based services and resources.
Commissioner Todd Barnett marked the opening of the Lake Street Safety Center as another step in creating a community safety center infrastructure and safety system.
Safety Center City and rotating community organization services and resources include:
- 311 customer support
- Mental health first responders
- Opioid crisis support
- Minimal Minneapolis police presence
- Greater Minneapolis Council of Churches
- City attorney’s office
